Our population is increasing
Our land area stays the same
Our food system has changed
SO...
Should we continue eating a lot of meat everyday or should we be moving towards eating little to no meat?

TEAM LOTS OF MEAT
We have been eating this way for hundreds of years - it is human instinct to eat meat We are omnivores through evolution - drastic change could cause devastating effects to our body We need complete protein which can only be found in animals and their by-products Lots of jobs are provided from our modern system If we don't eat the animals they will overpopulate From a religious perspective, the Bible says we are to eat the animals of the earth If we cut out meat it might just be replaced with rice and noodles which is not necessarily more healthy You can choose lean (low fat) meat You can choose meat that is naturally fed, free range and has very little processing There are more important issues to focus on such as fossil fuel use and water issues in the world Eating more vegetables and grains can mean eating a lot more pesticides and herbicides Some nutrients such as Vitamin B12, Creatine, Vitamin D3, Carnosine and DHA can only be found in meat and are necessary for brain and body function Meat gives us energy and strength to function normally in our day |
TEAM LITTLE TO NO MEAT
We aren't made to eat meat. Most don't have the skills to hunt and catch it, crew it up properly or digest it properly. Animals are given antibiotics which builds up antibiotic resistance in humans Animals are given hormones and growth drugs so they grow and can be sold faster and this is transferred to humans Animals can carry e.coli and it can be deadly bacteria We now use a factory farming system for our meat and it is not sustainable for the environment or our bodies Factory farming often leads to excessive waste dumped in our water sources and on our soils Factory farming often leads to poor treatment of animals In a factory farming situation if the meat is contaminated then many animals/meats will be contaminated and diseases will easily spread among humans Raising animals takes up too much land, requires too much water and food and uses too much oil for slaughtering and transport Can get protein from vegetable and animal by-product sources Meat takes a long time to digest and move through system and can lead to colon cancer The saturated fats in meat can lead to hypertension, obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease We don't have to worry about animals overpopulating because they are domesticated and we can easily control how many we raise and breed There are a lot of diseases associated with eating meat such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes. The popular study "The China Study" gives information that those with a mostly plant based diet have much lower chance of getting chronic illnesses |
