Fishing Vocabulary
Aquaculture - taking care of fish and plants in a controlled or natural environment
Bottom Feeders - fish and other species that feed and live along the bottom of the water
By-catch - all the other sea creatures which are caught by a net but not what was intended to be caught
Commercial Fishing - this means that you catch fish mostly for profit
Discards - all the sea creatures that were caught unintentionally (by catch) and are then thrown back into the ocean or discarded on the boat
Dredging / Trawling - a method of fishing
Gill Net - a modern method of fishing
Harpoon - a traditional method of fishing
Hook and line - a method of fishing
No Take Zones - these are areas designated by governments or organizations where fishing is not allowed or only allowed in certain months of the year
Overfishing - this is when too many fish are taken from an area and they are no able to repopulate (breed) fast enough and their numbers will slowly decrease
Pelagic Fish - these are fish that are found near to the surface
Salinity - the saltiness of the water
Shark Finning - this is when you catch a shark, cut off its fins and thrown it back into the water where it will sink down as it can no longer swim
Shellfish - are fish species that have an outer covering or shell
Sonar - the is technology used to find fish where sound waves are bounced off the bottom of the water
Spawning - this is when fish deposit their eggs/sperm into the water
Sport Fishing - fishing in competition or against a record/person but releasing most of what is caught back into the wild
Sustainable Fishing - this means to use methods that will allow fish populations to repopulate, only catching what is needed, and causing as little disturbance to coral, the bottom and other species in the water
